All Field Office Technical
Guide (FOTG) soils information can be accessed in this section and its
subsections. Most of the FOTG soils
reports can be produced from the soil database downloads
available below. Microsoft Access 97 or higher is needed in
order to view them. Other reports are
downloadable or viewable as Adobe Acrobat Reader (pdf)
documents or can be acquired from the local field office in each soil survey
area. Reports only available from the field office are mentioned in the
subsections for each soil survey area. Internet Explorer 5.x or higher should
be used to view these pages and screen resolution be set to 1024 by 768 or you
may not see the full screens.
Soil Database Downloads
Getting the Soils Data Files
The Microsoft Access 97
Databases are available only as self extracting executable files from the ftp
site:
ftp://ftp-fc.sc.egov.usda.gov/TX/pub/soils/sectionII/downloads/Acess97Databases/.
Depending on your operating
system, you can copy to folder and unzip, or left click and then open and unzip
to your hard drive, or save the executable file and then unzip by double
clicking the executable file. If you set
your Internet Explorer option to View List you can select from a vertical
list. You can use the soil_d_tx*.mdb
file produce soil reports for Field Office Technical Guide soils information in any survey area in the state of
File Naming Conventions
Each Access database is in a
file named with the prefix "soil_d_"
followed by the soil survey area symbol (such as
tx027) and the suffix ".mdb". An example of the complete file name is
soil_d_tx027.mdb. The tx027 is the soil
survey area symbol found in the list at the bottom of this page. Double click the *.mdb
file and open it if you have a fast internet connection and run the Access
reports, or save it to disk to your hard drive rather than open it. Saving the file to disk insures you have the
complete functionality of the Access database.
These databases work with Access 97 or can be opened and run with later
versions of Microsoft Access.
When you start up the Access
97 database, a screen will come up and you can select one or all, or scattered
groups of soil map units. Chose one from
the list of reports you want to run, then click
"generate report". Using
Select Parameters you can run reports on interpretations not listed in the
standard set of reports.
Versions of the Access
Databases
All reports from the Access
Databases have a Distribution Generation Date listed at the bottom of the
report that identifies the day the data was created. Only certified datasets are posted to the ftp
site. The file list on the ftp server
indicates the date and time of certification.
Soil Geospatial Data
Soil Data Viewer is a tool
built as an extension to ArcView ® that allows you to
easily create soil-based thematic maps.
Soil DataViewer shields users and applications
from the complexity of the soil database and incorporates rules for appropriate
use of soil data. It provides an easy to
use tool for geospatial analysis of soil information for resource assessment
and management. The requirements to run
the Soil Data Viewer are Arc View 3.x, the Soil data Viewer extension download from the Information Technology Center, and SSURGO shape files from NCGC, and the Access
97 database mentioned above: ftp://ftp-fc.sc.egov.usda.gov/TX/pub/soils/sectionII/downloads/Acess97Databases/. Only the shape files from NCGC dated November
2001 or later are compatible with the current version of the Soil Data Viewer
and the Access 97 databases.
If you don't have Arc View,
you may be able to view shape files using a download of ArcExplorer 2.
File Viewers
Those who do not have
Microsoft Office 97 or higher version, or Adobe Acrobat Reader may need to
download these file viewers. Most of the
contents of the eFOTG soils information is in html format, but some is Microsoft word documents, or pdf format (Adobe Acrobat).
