Definitions

• Area Symbol — A symbol that uniquely identifies a single occurrence of a particular type of soil survey area (e.g., "NJ001").
• Area Name — The name given to a specific Soil Survey Area.
• Map Unit Name — The correlated name of a map unit, which typically includes the names of the major soil components and often a slope range (e.g., "Downer sandy loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes, Northern Tidewater Area").
• MUKEY — A non-connotative string of characters used as a unique persistent identifier (primary key) for a record in the mapunit table.
• MUYSM — The symbol used to uniquely identify a soil map unit within a specific soil survey (e.g., "DoeAO").
• Suitable for long leaf pine — It is soil conditions where long leave pine grows best. These conditions are moderately to excessively drained sandy soils, in areas without flooding or ponding for extended period, with pH between 4.5 to 6.0, and low organic matter.
• Undrained leaching index — It is the potential for nutrients or pesticides to leach below the root zone into groundwater.
• Wind erodibility index — It is the grouping of soils that have similar properties affecting their resistance to soil blowing in cultivated areas.
• Erodibility factor — Quantify soil detachment by runoff and raindrop impact. These erodibility factors are indexes used to predict the long-term average soil loss from sheet and rill erosion under crop systems and conservation techniques. Factor Kw applies to the whole soil, and factor Kf applies only to the fine-earth (less than 2.0 mm) fraction.
• Topographic factor — It is the horizontal distance from the origin of overland flow to the point where either (1) the slope gradient decreases enough that deposition begins or (2) runoff becomes concentrated in a defined channel.
• Soil loss tolerance factor — It is defined as the maximum amount of erosion at which the quality of a soil as a medium for plant growth can be maintained.
